    Social Media

The phrase ‘Web 2.0’ was coined in 2004 and refers to a fundamental shift in the use of the internet know more commonly know as Socal Media. It is a marketing term used to differentiate how web-based technologies are now used and how they have shaped the move from information-only websites (Web 1.0) to fully interactive social networking sites.

Social Media websites are designed to promote creative ideas and sharing between users of a network, often over a number of platforms.

More of a conceptual idea than anything tangible, Social Media has provoked sometimes heated debate amongst many web experts about exactly what it represents. However, it is universally accepted that Social Media websites emphasise user participance and allow users to do more than just retrieve information.

    Interaction over information

The web has evolved and so users no longer want to just pull information from it, they want to use it in many different ways, and new web technologies allow them to do that. Interaction is now the key for web users, site owners and anyone who wants to do business on the web.

    Social interaction

Social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo have boomed in popularity as users demand the ability to detail every aspect of their lives online. These sites are the natural evolution of blogs, which were just online postings of a diary, to totally interactive social networking sites where multi-layered communities are built online.

Social networking sites are now the most popular on the web and users can select a range of online tools that allow them to personalise their experience. Information is added incessantly and is often rated and commented upon by online peers.

    Multiple platforms

Social Media is available across many devices such as PDAs, mobile phones, TVs and games consoles. That allows users to access their favourite websites in many ways than just through their PC.

    RSS: Spotlight

    • RSS (formally "RDF Site Summary", known colloquially as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or pod casts.
    • An RSS document, which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel", contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text.
    • RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favourite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.
    • RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader" or an "aggregator".
    • The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process.
    • The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.
