Twitter looks set to sign up user number 500,000,000 this Wednesday, according to social media trend-watchers.
It marks nearly two years of continuous steep growth for the microblogging site, which has continued at a steady pace , due in large part to such technological breakthroughs as the site being integrated into devices running Apple's iOS operating system – notably iPhones.
Tweets are of great interest to trend-spotters in social media because each one is loaded with a stack of data about the person who sent it.
Writing on Digitalbulletin.co.uk's The Wall blog, social media specialist Adrian Pelzer produced a graph, which showed that between 2007 and 2009, the uptake of Twitter remained slow but fairly steady.
The real take-off point came in the second quarter of 2009, and the site signed up its 50 millionth user halfway through that year.
Since then, the graph of users added has climbed steeply and steadily, and at the time Pelzer's story was published on The Wall, the figure stood at 497,933,824. The graph is being regularly updated in real time, so it will be possible to see exactly when Twitter registers its landmark 500 millionth user.
