Twitter set to roll out enhanced brand pages

Rumours are widespread that Twitter will make an announcement this week on improving the services it offers to companies.

Comments from Patricio Robles, writing on eConsultancy.com in response to a speculative article from Business Insider, suggest that Twitter could be looking to follow Facebook, which has seen a massive take-up by companies of its Pages format.

These have been used to leverage extra followers, and recruit 'brand ambassadors', and although the main challenge for businesses is to put a value on the buzz and extra business that this creates, there is wide interest from major companies in getting themselves seen by Twitter's growing user base.

But as Robles writes: "The big question for Twitter is whether or not going the route of Facebook would enhance the user experience.

He adds: "While it's easy to see brands getting excited about the ability to extend what can be done on a Twitter page, it's not quite clear [whether] users will be pleased."

Finally, Robles points out: "Part of Twitter's appeal is its simplicity. If brands clutter their pages with iFrame-based shopping experiences, games and the like, [it] could be fundamentally changed – and not necessarily for the better."
