SEO and web analytics remain closed books to many firms

The practice of search engine optimisation, and understanding of methods of measuring the amount of traffic a company receives through its website are still patchy, according to research by a web hosting company.
Computerworld magazine reports the findings of a survey by a web hosting company which suggests that more than 40 per cent of businesses do not make any attempts at SEO with the aim of boosting their positions in ranking results.
Their main reasons for holding back on SEO activity is that they believe it would be too expensive for them to pay to get a specialist in the field on board.
Meanwhile, just 28 per cent of business representatives who responded to the survey said they could understand the number of visitors to their website properly.
More alarmingly, an almost identical proportion say they have never interacted with customers using any form of online communication, including social media, while more than two in five don’t have a form on their website through which customers can directly contact them by email.
