Facebook has taken over as the top social media portal in India for the first time, having recorded a massive visitor growth of 179 per cent in the year ending in July, according to figures from internet measurement experts at comScore.
“The social networking phenomenon continues to gain steam worldwide, and India represents one of the fastest growing markets at the moment,” said Will Hodgman, comScore executive vice president for the Asia-Pacific region.
“Though Facebook has tripled its audience in the past year to pace the growth for the category, several other social networking sites have posted their own sizeable gains.”
Eighty-four per cent of India’s total of 33 milion internet users aged 15 and over used a social networking site at some time in the month, comScore reported.
Use of social networking among Indian citizens is growing at three times the rate of the number of internet users itself, the report also found.
With 20.9 million visitors in the month, Facebook was more popular than native site Orkut.
Twitter has also seen impressive growth, with its visitor figures up by a massive 239 per cent over 12 months ago, to reach 3.3 million.
